Café Flor Rosa
History Martha Ojeda arrived in Colonia Loayza in 1987 because her
father-in-law advised her to grow coffee. In addition to working with
coffee, Martha works as a cook in the Caranavi Hospital. She has one day
off a week, and she takes full advantage of it. She wakes up at 4:00 in
the morning to work with her husband and children to process coffee.
Sometimes she returns to work in the hospital kitchen without even
sleeping. All of this effort is worth the trouble for Martha. Her
children have been able to study and this year they will graduate from
high school in Caranavi. Her work in the hospital helps a lot, but
coffee is her principal income. She participated in the Cup of
Excellence so that her product would have a greater value. The day she
heard about her prize was very emotional. “That day was like a dream. I
couldn’t find the words to describe it. I put my trust in God that I
would be able.” All of Martha’s efforts and her earnings from the
international auction will be used for capital improvements, and for
some basic needs of her family. “I’m going to invest in improving my
coffee. For my two children who will go to the university this year…
this money is for them.”
