Café Ocho
History For twenty two years, Eusebio Marca has worked with coffee. He remembers
that the market has had its ups and downs. He learned from that and continued
to help his neighbors and to work on his own farm. In 1992, the price of
coffee was 22 bolivianos per quintal in Caranavi. So he took the initiative
and traveled to La Paz, where he sold his coffee for 50 bolivianos per quintal.
Returning to his community, he helped organize an effort to continue selling
this way. As a director, in 2000, he became one of the founding members
of Unión ProAgro, one of the most important coffee producer organizations
in the region. He participated in the first coffee competitions in Bolivia,
reaching second place in 2004. This year he participated again and will
continue to do so in the future.
”I’ve seen that these competitions help us do better. We used to punish
ourselves because we didn’t manage a good coffee. It’s been a dream come
true for me, in a way, because, we can’t keep suffering, selling to the
private companies. They squeeze the life out of us. Now we sell to export
markets and they give us a good price.”
