Farm Histroy
Fazenda Pedra do Sino, José Roberto Vidigal Santana's
property, is located in a land that has extremely rich soil in organic
matter, with dry and mild temperate climate, at an altitude of 1050 to
1320 meters. Thirty percent of its area is dedicated to natural
preservation, where there are two waterfalls and numerous springs and
water sources that are carefully maintained to preserve the environment
and its natural beauty. Springs start at the top of the mountains.
The employees are assisted to maintain their health
and with schooling for the whole family. All legal rights are respected,
and the farm employs no children under age.
Coffee processing system
Coffee is picked manually and selectively, with high
quality yield, obtaining up to 65% in pulped cherry beans. Suspended
terraces are used until the time the beans are ready to be processed.
Concern with quality
The owner receives technical assistance from EMATER,
a government body that sends an Agronomist specialized in organic coffee
to monitor and provide advice on coffee growing. The coffees of the farm
received the SAT (no pesticides) coffee certificate from IMA, a
government body that chose the region of Araponga do start this project
in the whole state of Minas Gerais.
An audit by BCS do Brasil for organic certification
has already be requested. All standards are followed, including the use
of leguminous plants, bacteria and composting to enrich the soil and to
improve quality and productivity.
