2008 Brazil Cup of Excellence® Winning Farms - Auction January 13, 2009
Lot#: 22 Marcio Heleno de Carvalho Junqueira - Sitio Bela Vista

Overview

Bela Vista Ranch, located in a mountainous region, was purchased in 1997, and right after the coffee growing was started. This kind of plantation is favored by the proper climate conditions and altitude observed in the property. The coffee trees crops were cultivated at an altitude of 3937 feet, following the modern techniques and using selected seeds and coffee seedlings. The property shows a fertile soil and forest reservations, stating the constant worrying of the producer about preserving the native forests and water springs in the region, which shelters large vegetal species and wild animals.

Processing system of the coffee beans

The harvest is selected and done by hand due to the topography of the land, stripping the coffee berries on a cloth that covers the ground, avoiding the contact with the it. Right after, the coffee berries are taken to the processing area to be washed, to remove their skins then and to be dried. The coffee berries are carefully spread over drying patios made of cement and hanging patios, so that they will not lose the quality of the drink. The drying is slow and homogenous, done under the sun. As it reaches the ideal percentage of humidity, the coffee beans are stored in covered wooden storehouse, where they rest for a period of 30 days. After the rest period, the samples are processed, packed and stored at the Cocarive Cooperative, in Carmo de Minas, where the definite pattern classification is done.

Concern on the quality

The crops management is done in a sustainable way, aiming to leave to the next generation the same or a better environment than the one from nowadays. Since the planting, the producers excel in quality, selecting the best seedlings, as well as the best soils, with the purpose of producing a special, heavy-bodied and sweet coffee.

Bela Vista Ranch has as a goal to improve constantly the quality of the coffee produced. As a member of Cocarive (Regional Cooperative of Coffee Producers of Vale do Rio Verde), it takes part on meetings, seminars and visits to other properties, which disclose technologies for the quality improvement. The constant concern on the quality awarded the Bela Vista Ranch with the presence among the finalists of the Brazil Award Cup of Excellence, and the 10th position at the “17th Brazil Award of Coffee Quality for Espresso”, from Illycaffé, crop 2007/2008.
