La Esperanza La Esperanza
La Esperanza

The members of this family are Mr. James Keihner and Mrs. Liliana Rodríguez, Mr. James from United States background and Mrs. Liliana from Costa Rica. By 1993 the Keihner Rodríguez Family where living in United States, and where visiting Costa Rica from time to time to see their family relatives that dedicated to the coffee activity which was very profitable in Los Santos region. Inspired by their families, in 1995 Mrs. Liliana and Mr. James decided to buy a property where they could start growing coffee and begin in this business. This is how they acquired the today called “Finca La Catalina".

Part of the efforts to improve the conditions of the farm consisted in allowing the natural vegetation to grow that could coexist with the coffee crop and help diminish the use of weedkiller products. Also, organic material was incorporated to improve the soil and avoid possible erosion. Avocado plants where seeded as well as other types of trees that could help keep the biological balance in the property.

During the harvest season, the worker number increases to sixty people approximately, and the majority are young adults from Panama. In equal way, they all receive a fair wage, a suitable home and basic services.

Without place for doubt the Keihner Rodriguez Family has fought hard to produce in balance with nature.
