Overview
Embedded right in the heart of the Apaneca-Ilamatepec
mountain range there lays the Nejapa 2 farm. This 11 hectare estate is
located on the western region of El Salvador and 89 kilometres away from
its capital. The farm’s altitude of 1450 meters above sea level and its
soil of volcanic nature provides the estate with all the rightful
conditions for gourmet coffee harvesting.
Since 1996, the farm has been owned and operated by
Francisco Gregg, a 36 year-old business administrator and a fourth
generation coffee producer, whose innovative ways have placed him and
his farm among the most selective gourmet coffee producers in El
Salvador.
The Nejapa farm currently has a crew of 15 men and
women from the Apaneca community. This crew is profoundly convinced of
the farm’s philosophy of continuous quality enhancement processes, while
at the same time maintaining good and harmonious practices with nature.
This philosophy includes being one of the pioneers in using specialized
crews of women in terms of selecting plant genetics, determining
rightful pruning stages, and establishing strict quality control
guidelines during production and harvesting.
At the Nejapa 2 farm there is a commitment with
nature by preserving its biodiversity and its resources. Coffee is 100%
shade grown, which ensures the preservation of soil, water, and air
quality. This compromise and good coffee practices has enabled Nejapa 2
to make a notable difference in the surrounding community and in the
resulting flavour and aromas of this coffee as 25th place in this year’s
Cup of Excellence. Finally, being selected among the 36 winners of COE
2008 reaffirms Nejapa owner’s continuous commitment to quality and
particular mission to put Salvadoran coffee and its attributes on the
specialty coffee map for many years to come.
