About Us
Don Roberto puts into practice the knowledge
inherited from his ancestors in the production of his coffee. He belongs
to the fourth generation of a family of coffee producers with a
tradition of producing excellent coffees like those entered in the
auction.
El Bosque is in the municipality of Amatitlán, a few
miles from the capital of Guatemala City, overlooking the beautiful lake
of the same name. El Bosque is situated on volcanic terrain between
5,000 and 5,500 feet. The farm covers 32 hectares, all dedicated to the
cultivation of strictly hard bean Bourbon, producing an annual yield
between 14 and 17.5 quintales in gold per hectare.
All the coffee is wet-milled in Palin, forty five
minutes down the mountain in the pass between the volcanos of Agua and
Pacaya (one of the most active in Central America). This location offers
better climatic conditions for drying the beans under the sun and the
opportunity to offer a truly high quality product.
The view from the farm is dominated by Pacaya, whose
crater is only three miles distant and the sound of whose eruptions
continually frighten the inhabitants of the farm. Yet, at the same time,
this volcano's proximity enriches the plantations with sulfur and
potassium. Because of the mountainous terrain, the weather is mild with
an average annual temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit, 60% relative
humidity, and an average annual rainfall between 71 to 80 inches.
Besides producing high quality, strictly hard bean
coffees, the Díaz family is also dedicated to helping the community and
committed to protecting the environment. No pesticides nor herbicides
are used on the farm. All the wood cut during pruning or the renovation
of shade trees is used as fuel by the workers.
The farm also offers permanent and seasonal
employment to the inhabitants of the village of Eje Quemada. El Bosque
contracts full-time employees to maintain the plantations throughout the
year and offers work to many more during the harvest. Thanks to the hard
work of many neighbors and the Díaz family, who believe in the
importance of community development and a clean environment, the village
and the farm have pure water and electric energy.
