“Villa Fontana” Estate, Mozonte
Daniel Matute López
It can be say that this farm is located in the middle
of two lines of impressive mountains. In order to get to this farm you
must drive through roads of difficult access. But due to the abundance
of rivers and views, Villa Fontana is one of the places for Nicaraguans
to be proud.
Due to its geography, Villa Fontana produces a very
exquisite coffee. The coffee tasters (cuppers) awarded this coffee for
its excellence. It is precisely the high altitude of 1,700 meters (5,570
feet) over sea level which allows the harvest to grow with the best
attributes for exporting it.
This farm fulfills with the specific requirements in
the management of the “rojito” (red coffee cherry). The owner Daniel
Matute is doing the activity of every week, the payment of his workers.
“I give my permanent workers a special treatment, I give them a price in
their salary by paying them 45 cordobas everyday (according to the law
the payment is 33 cordobas). During the picking of the coffee I pay 14
cordobas for each basket”. I also give them other basic conditions for
their work and three meals a day. All these is very attractive for this
people. Some of them have to walk even 3 hours to get here or else wait
for a truck to bring them to the farm…. With all these benefits I return
the effort made by my boys”
Daniel feels “complete” since he also has the support
of his wife, who is in charge of coordinating the meals for everybody.
“She is always creating new food… the workers love the way she cooks” he
tells us this as he hugs his wife, Doña Esperanza Tercero who also owns
a coffee farm with a very good position in the ranking of the “cup of
excellence”.
