“Los Papales” Estate, Jinotega
Martha Verónica López
Martha Veronica López, is well known in Jinotega. She
is the manager of one of the most important banks of the region, but she
is better known for her devotion to the farm that she inherited from her
mother “Los Papales”. This farm is only 15 minutes away from the city.
The farm offers a beautiful and unique view of all the city of Jinotega.
“Since I was a little girl I knew what was to work in
the field and I had no problem in learning the coffee business… Today I
am business administrator and I move within the banking World…I have
learned that in order to sell the coffee you have to know some tricks…
many times the coffee might have been very well handled but if you do
not find an adequate buyer… you may run the risk of selling your harvest
at a low price regardless of how much you have invested on it…”
While we walk around the wet mill, the Mandador (farm
manager) shows Veronica the recent works that been done in the washing
basins. He then continues inspecting the growth of the coffee trees that
have been sowed in the highest spot of the mountain.
Since the farm is so close to the city, Verónica is
thinking to live permanently in the farm. She is building an elegant
“casona” (house), which is in the last phase of construction.
“In the next coffee season, my two daughters and I
will be full time working in the picking activities. My house is almost
ready. Living in the farm will allow us to interact with all the members
of this farm and also to direct accordingly the development plans”.
Los Papales is considered a model farm. It has a
school for the children of the workers, housing for the permanent
workers, an extensive camp, all the facilities of the coffee mills
extremely clean and the good taste that it gives to be managed by a
woman.
My Mother Angelina López is the Owner of Los Papales
but I take care of the Farm.
