“El Porvenir” Estate, Las Manos
Manuel González Ponce
El Porvernir Estate is located very close to the
northern border of the country. It is here in this farm, where we find
the very dynamic Don Manuel González Ponce. He is all the time telling
old stories regarding the extensive coffee areas which were found at the
beginning of the XX century. He is a man with a great expertise when it
comes to the handling of the “golden grain”, as coffee has been named
since those years.
His abilities are many not only with coffee but also
with love… when he met his wife, she was only 20 years old and he was
celebrating his 62 birthday. Since 16 years ago, she has inspired him
and giving him youth. She has become an inseparable partner. She helps
Manuelito in preparing the food for the workers of the farm. During the
coffee crop, the workers (all of them Nicaraguans) add to a number of 30
peasants. These peasants come from all over Nueva Segovia.
“Despite his age, Manuel is very active in the
furrows and he never gests sick” says Francisca, while she cleans an
amount of coffee which is ready to be roasted. “I am always with my
boots on” says immediately Don Manuel, while he proudly shows the coffee
plantation, which has giving him many satisfactions.
His right hand is Omar, who is one of his
grandchildren. He is in charge of “los mozos” a name given to the coffee
workers. This small family of coffee producers is another sample of the
coffee excellence and tradition of the northern part of the country.
