Brazil’s Coffee Diversity Provides Framework for Cup of Excellence Success
A diverse set of twenty-six award winning Cup of Excellence coffees from Brazil went up for auction Tuesday, January 19, 2010. During the nearly six-hour auction, high-end coffee roasters and importers from around the world bid record amounts to gain ownership of their favorite lots. The winning bids were outstanding: all but one coffee received over $6.00/lb, the average price was $7.32/lb, and the top coffee garnered over $24/lb.
After ten years of conducting the Cup of Excellence program in Brazil and several years of the region known as Carmo de Minas taking many of the top honors, this year’s winners hailed from multiple coffee growing regions across Brazil. Piata, a region in Bahia, was represented with many winning farms as well as the prestigious first place. This first place coffee was described by the international jury as having chocolate flavor notes, a sweetness reminiscent of dried cherries with creamy, rich, body and a long, round finish. All of the Piata coffees are the Catuai variety but most of the other Cup of Excellence winners are the heirloom Yellow Bourbon variety that has historically ranked well in tasting competitions.
The international jury that selected the 26 winners during the final phase of the competition in November was comprised of professional cuppers from 16 different countries making the Cup of Excellence the most stringent globally recognized award given to any coffee.
The successful buyers are scattered geographically but the vast majority of the coffees are heading to Japan where the demand for exemplary quality, farm-identified coffee continues to grow. Two Brazilian specialty roasters will offer their customers a chance to taste their own finest coffees and multiple South Korea companies are planning to excite a rapidly growing marketplace. Companies from Sweden, the USA, Canada, Taiwan, Australia, UK, Norway, Poland, Australia, South Africa, Iceland, Taiwan, and The Netherlands round out the successful bidders.
This marks the 54th auction for the Cup of Excellence program and the tenth for Brazil. The COE program is owned by the non-profit Alliance for Coffee Excellence, Inc. and was managed in partnership with The Brazil Specialty Coffee Association (BSCA) – a critical partnership that began with the very first COE program in 1999. BSCA helped create the now famous competition/auction that identifies and rewards high quality farmers with prices multiple times the market rate.
