The Essentials for Searching
Doing a search on the new Cup of Excellence Farm Database Search is easy.
Simply select the program(s) from the Programs dropdown list and type one
or more search terms (the words or phrase that best describe the information
you want to find) into the search criteria box and click on the "View Search
Results" link.
In response, the search engine produces the results: a list of farm pages
related to your search terms, with the most relevant page appearing first,
then the next, and so on.
To view the detailed farm information click on the farm
name or the page link.
Choosing search terms
Choosing the right search terms is the key to finding the information
you need.
Start with the obvious – if you are looking for farms that produce caturra
variety coffee then simply leave <All Programs> in the Programs dropdown
menu and type caturra in the search criteria box. Then click the "View Search
Results" link.
But it is often advisable to use multiple search terms and narrow your
search by selecting the appropriate program. For example if you were looking
for a Colombian caturra coffee with an apricot flavor; simply select Colombia
in the programs dropdown and type caturra apricot in the search criteria
box. Then click the "View Search Results" link.
You may want to refine your search to search for 2005 Colombian
coffees only. Select the 2005 Program under Colombia in the Programs dropdown
menu. Then click the "View Search Results" link.
Capitalization
Farm Database Search searches are NOT case sensitive. All letters, regardless
of how you type them, will be understood as lower case. For example, searches
for: Caturra, CATURRA and cAtUrRa will all return the same results.
Automatic exclusion of common words
Farm Database Search ignores common words and characters such as “a”,
“and”, “the” and “how”, as well as certain single digits and single letters,
because they tend to slow down your search without improving the results.
Word variations (stemming)
Farm Database Search uses stemming technology. When appropriate, it will
search not only for your search terms, but also for words that are similar
to some or all of those terms. If you search for caturra dry sweet fruit,
Farm Database Search will also search for caturra dried sweet fruit, and
other related variations of your terms. Synonyms Farm Database Search has
the ability to search for synonyms. When appropriate, it will search not
only for your search terms, but also for synonyms. For example, if you search
for caturra chocolate, Farm Database Search will also search for caturra
cocoa.
